"It was definitely better to not know," Ferrari said.
Ferrari rolled in the putt to get up and down at the par 5 18th hole. The birdie gave him a one-shot win in the final round of the Section 1 boys golf championship at Fenway Golf Club.
Ferrari earned his first sectional title and qualified for the state tournament for a third straight year. His two-day total of 150 edged Suffern's Alex Kyriacou and Ossining's Judson Langille by a shot.
"It's really an honor," said Ferrari, who carded a 79 after entering Wednesday in a three-way tie for the lead. "To follow all the other names from the past years, the previous champions, it was really humbling. I’m proud of myself. This year, I really wanted to win the section. I knew I could do it."
The winning birdie highlighted an eventful closing stretch. Ferrari nearly drove the green at No. 15 and then sank a 25-foot putt for eagle. He followed with a double bogey at 16, but rebounded with a testy two-putt for par from 50 feet on 17.
"After that, I felt like I was in a really good position going into 18," Ferrari said.
The greens at Fenway proved treacherous for the field. After nine of players shot 75 or better at Waccabuc Country Club Monday, just five managed to shoot 78 or better Wednesday.
Irvington's Thomas Corrigan fired the round of the day with a 4-over 74.
"Some of the pin placements were really difficult," Ferrari said. "If you didn't take advantage of the good ones you were in trouble on the holes that had difficult pins."
Scarsdale's Jay Allen, Bronxville's Will Tormey and John Jay-East Fishkill's Aidan Autero all tied for fourth four shots back. Scarsdale's Ben Schwartz, who shared the first-round lead, placed seventh, and teammate Steven Lee and Bronxville's Dan Bettino earned the last two spots on the state team in a three-way playoff with Bronxville's Liam Bishop.
The top nine will unite to compete for Section 1 in the NYSPHSAA boys golf championships on June 3-4 at Cornell's Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Ithaca. Section 1 has produced the last three individual state champions — Scarsdale's James Nicholas (2015), Bronxville's Connor Daly (2016) and Somers' Nathan Han (2017).
