Mids Fall Short in Men's Golf Star Match
October 22nd 2015 - ANNAPOLIS, Md.— The Army West Point menÃ¢ÂÂs golf team won four of the seven singles matches on Saturday at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club to defeat Navy in the annual Star Match, 6.5 - 4.5. The two teams entered the day all square after both teams won two four-ball matches on Friday.
Navy took a 3-2 lead in the match when freshman Griffin Peters (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) dealt the Cadets' Justin Pagila a 2-and-1 loss in the first matchup.
Army West Point battled back and won two in a row to take a 4-3 advantage in the match, as Matt Plunkett and Dean Sakata went 2-0 on the weekend with wins in both their doubles and singles matches. Plunkett scored a 2-and-1 victory over Navy junior Ben Allen (San Marino, Calif.), while Sakata held off the Mids' Eric Terminello (White Plains, N.Y.) on the 18th to take the win, 1 up.
Navy team captain David Won (Bothell, Wash.) battled his way back from a deficit to half his match against Cadet rookie Nick Turner.
A member of the Patriot League 25th Anniversary Team, Army West Point junior Peter Kim claimed a 4-and-2 victory over Navy sophomore Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) before Eric Peng clinched the win for the Cadets behind his 2-and-1 victory over Navy junior Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.).
Navy junior Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.) went 2-0 on the weekend after posting a 2-and-1 win against Marcus Plunkett, who is also a member of the Patriot League 25th Anniversary Team. Terry never trailed in his match against Plunkett.
